Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally, responsible for approximately 51% of blindness cases, causing progressive vision impairment, especially in low-income regions with limited access to surgery
Despite suffering from cataract, achieving its preventive cure is difficult in many low-income regions, contributing to higher rates of blindness. Tackling extreme poverty and needless cataract blindness has not been an easy feat.
However, The Ruit Foundation (formerly known as Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation) has committed itself to reduce needless blindness by making surgery accessible in impoverished areas and obliging to the #2030InSight strategic plans to end avoidable sight loss worldwide and as well as contributing to the first of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal to eradicate extreme poverty.
By working together with numerous partner hospitals in Nepal, The Ruit Foundation has successfully cured 41,461 individuals of cataract blindness; a significant step towards eradicating unnecessary blindness and alleviating extreme poverty.
