Eye care services were started by the local people in Janakpur in 1959 AD to addressing cataract blindness by organizing seasonal eye camps. Taking into consideration the need to institutionalize eye care programme Shree Janaki Eye Care Centre, now called NRCS Shri Janaki Eye Hospital (SJEH) was established in 1982AD with the initiative of Nepal Red Cross Society.
Shree Janaki Eye Hospital have been collaborating on training and surgical activities with Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology since signing a MoU in 2000 to make eye care services effective and efficient within the Janakpur zone through capacity building of staff, assisted surgical clinics and mutual technical support.
